What is appendix

An appendix is a small tube-like structure situated on the right lower side of the abdomen. It is attached to the first part of the colon or large intestine.

The exact function of the appendix is unknown, and it is considered a vestigial organ. It means that it is almost a functionless organ.

When the lumen of the appendix gets blocked by infection or a small piece of hard stool, it leads to inflammation, swelling, and pus formation. This condition is known as Acute Appendicitis.

Symptoms of rectal prolapse

  • Sudden pain begins around your navel and often shifts to your lower right abdomen.
  • Chronic Constipation
  • Pain that worsens if you cough, walk or make other sudden movements
  • Pain that worsens if you cough, walk or make other sudden movements
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bloating or distention of abdomen

Complications of untreated appendicitis

Acute Appendicitis is usually an emergency condition.

If left untreated, the appendix will usually burst to spill all its content in the abdominal cavity. It can lead to acute inflammation of the abdomen, a condition known as peritonitis.

Peritonitis is a severe infection that can even prove to be fatal unless managed quickly and aggressively.

Sometimes, acute infection of the appendix can lead to the formation of pus or abscess in and around the appendix, necessitating surgical intervention.

Best treatment for appendicitis

The best treatment offering a permanent cure for acute appendicitis removal of the appendix, known as appendicectomy

There are three types of surgery for removal of the appendix:

Conventional Open Surgery:

It is the most traditional method for performing surgery. A 4 inch is placed in the right lower abdomen, and the appendicectomy is done through this incision. Nowadays, we rarely perform this type of surgery as it is associated with all the disadvantages of open surgery in terms of recovery, pain, infection, and hernia formation.

Laparoscopic Appendicectomy:

In conventional laparoscopic surgery, the procedure is carried out using three small incisions of 0.5 cm each.

The surgeon views the internal organs through an extended thin scope.

The images are projected on a monitor, and the dissection is carried out with the help of special instruments.

The technique aids the surgeon in providing him a wider angle of vision, thereby making the procedure more effective

Single Incision Laparoscopic Appendicectomy:

The most advanced and latest form of laparoscopic surgery

The entire procedure is carried out using a small incision of 2cm inside the umbilicus, making it a virtually scarless surgery.

The surgery is performed at centers having state-of-the-art video technology and equipment to ensure surgical brilliance.

Highly specialized flexible instruments are used, giving the advantage of maneuverability and greater reach.

This technique ensures maximum patient comfort, early discharge, rapid recovery, the least amount of pain, and excellent cosmesis.

Our team is well equipped with all the experience and expertise to carry out the single port surgery.

Advantages of single port laparoscopic surgery:

  • Speedy Recovery
  • Early and Easy Mobility
  • Discharge within 24 hours
  • Virtually Scarless Surgery
  • Minor tissue trauma and less post-operative pain
  • Less Dependence on pain reliever tablets
  • Low risk of infection
  • Almost no chance of hernia

The majority of the patients at our center get discharged within 24-36 hours of surgery. The surgery is done laparoscopically with a reduced ports technique; hence you can expect a speedier recovery.

If carried out by experienced hands, Laparoscopic surgery is associated with rapid recovery and produces long-lasting relief from symptoms. There is hardly any bed rest required, and patients can walk for long distances after 24 hours of surgery. You can start taking a bath from the next day of surgery. You can resume your normal activities within three days and join back job within seven days of surgery.

Presently, the best treatment for appendicitis is single port laparoscopic surgery, where a tiny incision is placed in the umbilicus or belly button. The entire surgery is carried out through this incision only. Single port laparoscopic surgery is not only associated with excellent cosmesis but with speedier recovery and lesser pain

The majority of patients can undergo single-port surgery successfully. However, in some patients, one or two additional ports need to be created for optimal outcomes. Such patients have had a history of previous abdominal surgery or in whom the appendix has poorly adhered to surrounding structures, or there is rupture of the appendix.

The best time to remove the appendix is within 72-96 hours after the onset of pain. After 3-4 days of commencement of pain, there can be lump formation, making the surgery difficult. There is a possibility of rupture of the appendix, making the surgical process more difficult.

There is always a high chance that pain might recur in the future. You must consult a specialist surgeon with all the reports even if the pain has subsided and you are feeling fit and fine after few days.

The surgeon will have a look at your reports and assess the severity of symptoms and disease. If the symptoms are mild, there is a possibility you may opt for a wait and watch policy, and surgical removal is not necessary.

Appendix does not play any role in the normal functioning of your body. Once you have recovered from surgery, you can carry a completely normal life. You do not need to even change your diet, exercise, or lifestyle.

Appendicitis is a medical emergency and seeks early intervention. If you are experiencing pain in the right lower abdomen or around belly button with or without fever and vomiting, its time to see a specialist surgeon as early as possible.

The appendix contains bacteria, which are usually harmless. When the appendix gets infected, this bacterium starts destroying the appendix. Untreated, the appendix can rupture, allowing these bacteria to leak into abdomen, a condition called peritonitis. This can lead to organ failure and death.
